The Cry of the Kaka (song)
Until recent times, life on the isolated stations in the high country could be very lonely and hard on relationships. Difficulties increased when access involved crossing mountain rivers and streams that were subject to flooding. I started this song while on a two day camp in torrential rain in the Mount Aspiring National Park, where I was surprised by the sight and sound of a few South Island Kaka. The story took a totally different tack when I finished it some time later.
The song was first released in 1990 on the album The Daisy Patch and has since been re-released on Live at Greendale and Below the High Country.
The Cry of the Kaka can be listened to here (MP3 format)
